Bill is returning to the United States to take up a broader corporate role with NMP parent company URS, where he will oversee a wide range of major projects after two years as the head of Sellafield Ltd, during which time he has guided the site through an unprecedented change and delivery programme.
Dr Wright, who has been Deputy Managing Director under Bill’s leadership, will formally take over the role of MD on Friday, February 4th, following the NMP Board meeting, and in line with the recognised NMP succession plan. George Beveridge will remain as Deputy MD and provide the required stability at the top level of the organisation together with an in-depth knowledge of the site’s operations.
George will be joined as Deputy MD by Doug Cooper, formerly President and General Manager at the Yucca Mountain repository project in Nevada.
NMP Chairman Tom Zarges paid tribute to Bill for the leadership and vision he has shown in his two years as head of site.
He said: “Bill has done a fantastic job as the MD of Sellafield Ltd and I, and the Board, have been very proud of his achievements over the last two years. It would have been the easiest thing in the world to stick with the original team that came onto the sites in 2008, but that is not what we are about – that is not what we committed to do. Bill will, however, remain on the NMP board.
“When we put our bid to NDA to manage the sites, we promised that we would utilise our full, formidable strength of talent, skills and experience to ensure that the lead team on the site was continually replenished to bring in new approaches, specifically aligned to moving challenges.
“We are therefore delighted that Todd is taking over as Managing Director. He has developed an in-depth understanding of Sellafield Ltd over the past two years and brings to the role a wealth of experience from senior roles in the US nuclear industry.
“Doug Cooper will bring a new dynamic to the team. He has delivered at the sharp end of the US nuclear industry and has managed major transition programmes at a number of the US’s leading commercial nuclear power plants with an impressive track record of delivery.”
Dr Wright said: “It’s a great honour to be stepping into the role vacated by Bill but I’m under no illusions that he’s going to be a very difficult act to follow.
“My two years in Cumbria have taught me so much and my priority as MD will be to continue the NMP mission at Sellafield, focusing on delivering real benefits for the site, the local community and the UK taxpayer.”
NDA Chief Executive Tony Fountain added: “Our thanks go to Bill for the significant contribution he has made in taking forward the Sellafield programme and we look forward to working with Todd in his new capacity in order to build on that progress.”
