The replacement Nitrogen Generation Plant is the largest task managed as part of the Magnox Swarf Storage Silo Asset Restoration Project and enables the continuation of nitrogen inerting system.
This creates a purge of inert gas to remove quantities of hydrogen which can build up from within the compartments of the silo.
The existing Nitrogen Generation Plant was installed in early 1980’s and has now reached the end of its operational life and requires replacement.
Central to the replacement plant is the contract to supply three nitrogen generating stand alone units which has recently been awarded by Sellafield to Air Products Ltd.
William Hudson, project manager said: “The replacement of the existing obsolete generator is a key objective for the Asset Restoration team and this contract represents a significant step towards that goal which will ultimately help to maintain legacy waste in a safe state.”
