Radioactive Materials Transport Team joins ONR

The Office for Nuclear Regulation ONR extends its remit as a new team with regulatory responsibility for the transportation of radioactive material joins the organisation.

Formerly part of the Department for Transport (DfT), the Radioactive Materials Transport Team (RMTT) regulates the transport of radioactive material by road and rail in Great Britain. They also advise on its transport by and sea and air within the United Kingdom.  This includes to and from licensed nuclear sites and non-nuclear sectors such as hospitals and education establishments.

The move follows legislative changes allowing for the transfer of competent authority powers from the Secretary of State for Transport to the Secretary of Sate for Energy and Climate Change.

RMTT’s transfer marks another milestone in ONR’s transformation into a single, integrated regulator that aims to secure the protection of people and society from the hazards of the nuclear industry

Mike Weightman, Head of ONR said: ‘I am pleased to officially welcome the Radioactive Materials Transport Team to ONR.  Now that RMTT is part of the ONR family, we can work together on transforming our organisation and fulfilling our vision of becoming a world-leading nuclear regulator.’
