Work starting on UKRWI inventory update

As work starts on compiling the next UK Radioactive Waste Inventory (UKRWI), views are being sought by NDA on how the information should be presented.

The inventory contains a number of reports and provides detailed information on the UK’s radioactive waste and is updated on a periodic basis. Compiled jointly by the NDA and the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), the most recent inventory was published last year, based on a stock-date of 1 April 2010.

The documents describe the sources, quantities and properties of radioactive waste that have already been generated and estimate the quantities that are expected to arise in the future.

The next update is due to be published electronically at the end of 2013, using information from a wide range of waste producers that will need to be prepared and submitted next year as follows:

  • Stock date – 1 April 2013
  • Data gathering and compilation – Summer 2013
  • Preparation of reporting outputs for website – Autumn 2013
  • Publication of 2013 UK Inventory on the website – End of 2013

The NDA is now seeking to understand which parts of the inventory are of most value to interested parties, and how to present the information in the most accessible and user-friendly format.

The 2010 and 2007 Inventories are available on the UKRWI website, jointly hosted by the NDA and DECC, while earlier inventories are available on request.

Interested parties are invited to complete a survey that will influence the format and presentation of the 2013 Inventory. Responses are requested by 30 September 2012.
