Nuclear spent fuel strategy White Paper
Nuclear Energy Insider has recently published a paper on nuclear spent fuel strategy written by NNL.
By 2018, all current contracts for the reprocessing of spent fuel in UK based reprocessing facilities will be completed, and so these facilities owned by the UK’s Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) will be closed. Therefore, it can be assumed that from 2018 onwards the UK will adopt a clear open fuel cycle for nuclear power production from the existing fleet and the anticipated new build programme of 16GW, reliant on the future provision of a deep geological disposal facility (GDF) and its receipt of spent nuclear fuel from circa 2075.
