Sellafield Ltd sweeps the board at national safety awards

sellafield logoSellafield Ltd has won 9 prestigious Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) gold awards – the best ever performance by a nuclear operator.

The awards were won by a range of different projects at Europe’s largest and most complex nuclear site, demonstrating the positive and proactive approach to safety across disciplines from nuclear waste management to infrastructure and major construction projects.

Sellafield Ltd’s Chief Officer for Environment, Health, Safety and Quality, Steve Long, said: “These awards are recognition of the fact that our safety standards are very high.

“The last two years have been the safest ever at Sellafield, in terms of conventional safety, and this past 12 months has seen our best ever radiological safety performance. We know that we have to strive for continuous improvement, always seeking opportunities to push us further, if we stand still we fall behind.

“When people think of Sellafield they probably think about decommissioning and knocking things down. But we are managing one of the biggest construction sites in the country and the radiological aspect of the nuclear waste that is stored here is an added complication. That we can achieve such high safety standards in such challenging circumstances is testament to the hard work and dedication of the workforce, and shows how seriously we take our responsibility to manage the clean-up of the UK’s nuclear legacy at Sellafield safely and securely.

“We have won RoSPA awards before – we’ve won gold awards before – but to win nine in the same year is unprecedented.

David Rawlins, RoSPA’s awards manager, said: “The RoSPA Awards encourage the raising of occupational health and safety standards across the board. Organisations that gain recognition for their health and safety management systems, such as Sellafield Ltd, contribute to a collective raising of the bar for other organisations to aspire to, and we offer them our congratulations.”

As the UK’s family safety charity, RoSPA’s mission is to save lives and reduce injuries covers all ages and stages of life. In support of this mission, the RoSPA Awards, which date back 58 years, recognise commitment to continuous improvement in accident and ill health prevention at work.

Through the scheme, which is open to businesses and organisations of all types and sizes from across the UK and overseas, judges consider entrants’ overarching occupational health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.

Simon McCrae, Head of Conventional Safety, Sellafield Ltd added: “I am delighted with this recognition of our commitment and focus on all aspects of safety across our business. Safe, secure, site stewardship is a mantra held closely by workers at all levels. Winning these awards is an acknowledgment that we’re doing the right things and delivering occupational safety excellence.”

Kliss McNeel of Nuclear Management Partners (NMP), the parent body organisation for Sellafield Ltd, is the former Director of Environment, Health, Safety and Quality for Sellafield Ltd. She spoke of her delight at the ROSPA success: “This fantastic achievement by Sellafield Ltd is absolute testament to the priority being placed on safety at Europe’s most complex and challenging nuclear site.

“NMP is extremely proud of the Sellafield Ltd management, its dedicated workforce and its sub-contractors who have all worked with intent to embed our new safety initiatives such as Movesmart, ACEMAN and peer-to-peer, and achieve the site’s best ever two years of safety performance.

“This host of awards is just recognition for the steps being taken by everyone at Sellafield Ltd to achieve the highest levels of safety possible for the 11,000 people who work there. This best ever RoSPA performance by a nuclear operator also recognises the achievements being made to safely reduce the hazard and risk of the nuclear legacy waste that is stored at Sellafield.”
