The Chinese Ambassador to the UK Liu Xiaoming has expressed his Government’s concern over delays to the UK’s decision on the Hinkley Point C plant. Given that the Chinese Government is normally reticent to express such views publicly it is an indication that the Chinese intend to play hardball with the UK over the project.
Speaking to the Financial Times Mr Liu described the situation as a threat to mutual trust between the two countries and implied that it could threaten other projects between the two countries which includes deals for UK companies in China.
At a time when, post the Brexit decision, the Government wishes to do more trade deals across the world, this clearly ramps up the pressure on Mrs May’s new Government. It is also understood that many Conservative backbenchers, and indeed some ministers, are putting pressure on the Prime Minister to approve the deal. A decision is expected this Autumn.
