Lib Dems reject Hinkley

While the issue of nuclear was not scheduled to be discussed at the Liberal Democrat Party Conference in Brighton this week (see the Nuclear Matters Newsletter for more on this), an emergency motion was submitted in light off the Government’s decision to approve the Hinkley Point Nuclear Power Station.

Following a lively debate, the conference voted for the Party’s official policy to be opposition to Hinkley C due to the cost of the contract for difference (CfD) in place to support it. The motion itself condemned several elements of the deal that have not changed since the Liberal Democrats were in Government. The premise being that the CfD was not subsidy when the Liberal Democrats were in Government but is now a 100% Government subsidy.
