The four principle unions representing workers across the NDA’s various facilities are considering industrial action over proposed cuts to nuclear workers’ pensions. The unions: GMB, Unite, Prospect and ASLEF representing workers at Sellafield, Magnox sites, the Low Level Waste repository, International Nuclear Services, Dounreay and Direct Rail Services (hence ASLEF’s involvement) object to proposed reductions to their members’ benefits, especially as they believe the pension scheme is not in deficit and is outside the civil service pension reform proposals.
While they all agree that they should oppose the proposals their responses are not uniform. The GMB intends to ballot on industrial actions to propose strikes in February or March. While the other unions are still considering what action to take.
