Magnox has completed its Active Effluent Discharge Line project at Wylfa ahead of schedule and £1million under the estimated cost.
A new twin-walled polyethylene pipe has been installed to discharge active effluent 250m offshore, enabling the cooling water system to be shut down and saving £2million in annual electricity costs. It has also minimised the site’s impact on the environment, with 70 per cent of the redundant pipeline also being recycled.
Paul Dundee, Project Manager, said, “Our major risks were unknown ground conditions and inclement marine weather, but great efforts were taken to ensure lessons learned were captured from other sites and extensive weather records were reviewed to determine the most cost effective risk/reward balance.”
“Decommissioning was carefully managed to maximise clean, reclaimable scrap resulting in just 30 per cent of the redundant pipeline being consigned as active waste.”
