The Korean nuclear giant Kepco has beaten Chinese company CGN to become the preferred bidder to take over the Moorside nuclear new build project in West Cumbria from Toshiba.
Toshiba has been looking for a new owner for the project since Toshiba ran into financial difficulties and was subsequently also forced to buy Engie out of the project.
The project would have used the Westinghouse (owned by Toshiba) AP1000 technology on the site but assuming the sale completes it will now be home to 2 Kepco APR1400 reactors. This technology though has yet to start approval by the UK regulators and so the project start date will inevitably have to be put back.
NuGen the Moorside development vehicle themselves will be updating the industry on the project at tomorrow’s Nuclear Industry Association’s Nuclear 2017 Conference.
